Do you love decorating for the seasons and holidays but don’t have the space to store all the holiday décor throughout the year? We can relate and today we’re sharing 8 tried and tested tips along with inspiration photos from Pinterest to help you celebrate the seasons while using minimal storage space.
- Find Décor in Nature
Think small pumpkins for your Thanksgiving tablescape or real flowers in a vase. At Christmas, this could mean hanging a real wreath on your door, using a real Christmas tree or hanging orange garland. These are all things that make a big impact but that you won’t need to store at the end of the season. Make it budget friendly by foraging the stems from your backyard or making your own orange garland.

- Frame It
Swap out the photos and prints in your frames for seasonal alternatives (e.g. a favourite family photo with changing leaves in the background in the fall or printable art featuring a snowy scene in the winter). Fortunately, storing these items takes up very little storage space so those of us in small spaces can still collect several seasonal prints and photos.

- Multi-purpose Décor
Before buying new seasonal décor, consider if it can work for multiple holidays. For example, a serving platter with pumpkins would be fun for fall but of course having a different serving dish for each season or holiday would take up a lot of space. Instead, for example, you could have a burgundy or sage platter that would work for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. This also applies to items like tablecloths, cloth napkins, throw blankets, etc.

- Décor You Can Fold
Textiles are a great way to transform your home each season without overloading your storage area. Cushion covers, tea towels, and tablecloths can be neatly folded into a small pile. For slightly larger items like tablecloths and duvet covers, see tip #3.

- Seasonal Storage Solutions
Getting creative with your storage solutions can go a long way. Keep your seasonal textiles in vacuum seal storage bags under a bed, use vertical space by hanging wreaths on command hooks in your garage, or store your favourite holiday mugs in that hard-to-reach cupboard above your fridge that can’t be used for items you need to access daily.

- Customize
If you like to hang a wreath on your door for each season and holiday, consider choosing a neutral green one then customizing as you go. For example, you can add small faux pumpkins and leaves for fall, add red ribbon at Christmas, and add tulips in the spring.

- Decorate with Food
Using food as décor means one less thing you need to store at the end of the season. This can also be budget friendly since the item is serving two purposes. This could be a bowl of seasonal fruit on the kitchen counter or dining table, glass canisters of seasonal candy or a gingerbread house at Christmas. The possibilities are endless!

- Borrow from Your Bookshelf
If you have a collection of books, you may have books in seasonal colors or on seasonal topics that you can pull out of a bookshelf and display as a stack on a console table. This can be a free way to bring seasonal colours to your space without introducing new items (that would need to be stored for the rest of the year!) into your home.
