8 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Decorating

Not ready to decorate for Christmas yet but want to get ahead on the preparation? Today we have 8 ways that you can get your home holiday ready without decorating. If you take some of these steps now, it will make your decorating easier, faster and leave you with Christmas decor that you love.

  1. Take Inventory: Take your decor out of storage and start to look through it. Identify anything that’s missing that you would like to add to your collection this year. Add these items to a shopping list (see #6). Remember to also identify any items that you don’t see yourself using again whether they’re no longer your style, you don’t have room, etc. Give these items away to friends or family or donate them. If you come across any items that are broken, missing pieces, etc. now is a good time to discard.
  1. DIY: If you’re planning on making any of your holiday decor this year, this is the best time to start. Your handmade items will be ready in time for decorating and you’ll get some projects out of the way before the holiday rush.
  1. Blank Slate: Put away seasonal decor that you still have on display from fall if you don’t think it will blend with your Christmas decor. This is also a good time to scan your home for any decor items that feel more suited to the spring and summer seasons that you can put away for fall and winter.
  1. Restock Your Supplies: Think about any supplies you will need when decorating your home for the holidays. This could be batteries for battery-operated twinkle lights, command hooks to hang a wreath, tape, etc. Check what you have and restock if needed.
  1. Deep Clean: Now is the time to clean any surfaces where you’ll be adding Christmas decor and won’t be able to clean as thoroughly for a while. If you’ll be adding decor like wreaths to mirrors or windows, ensure you clean those beforehand as well. This is another task that you’ll be glad you did in advance and will make your decorating much more seamless once you’re ready.
  1. Shop New Decor: Return to the shopping list you made when taking inventory of your decor (see #1). If you are missing any decor, shop or order now so you have your new items in time for Christmas decorating. This also gives you some time to look out for sales on decor.
  1. Make Room: Declutter your home to make space for the holiday decor and items that will be coming into your home over the next couple of months. Remember spaces like playrooms and kitchens where not only will you be adding decor but also gifts, holiday treats, etc.
  1. Laundry: This is a good time to wash any decor that has been stored away (if needed) like tablecloths, hand towels, sheets, etc. This way, you’ll have everything ready for when it’s time to decorate and you’ll be checking another item off your list before the hectic holiday season.
