How To Add Artwork to Your Home on a Budget

Filling the walls of your space with artwork you love can really make a house feel like a home. It can add a personal touch, add colour or texture, act as a conversation starter, serve as daily inspiration and so much more.

We know that artwork can be expensive so we are excited to share ideas for adding artwork to your home on a budget!

Let us know in the comments below if you will be trying one of these ideas or if you have discovered another great way to find affordable art for your home.

Download Your Art

There are so many beautiful downloadable prints available online with many for as little as $5. Search “downloadable art” on Etsy to get started. From traditional oil paintings to modern prints, there is something for every space. Once you purchase and download the file, you can print your new piece of art at a local print shop or online (e.g. Blacks or Staples).

Remember, if you choose a downloadable painting, remove the glass when you put the print in a frame. Without the shine from the glass, it is matte and looks much more like a real painting – especially at a distance.

Expand Small Pieces of Art

Smaller pieces of art – whether they are originals or prints – can be much more affordable but might be too small for your space. If you find a small piece of art that you love, consider framing it and using a large matte. This allows you to select a larger frame that takes up more real estate on the wall.

If you can’t find a frame with a large matte, try using an existing frame and make a new matte with poster board.

Make your Own Painting (Without Painting!)

If you would love to turn a favourite photo into a painting but you are not a painter, download an app that converts your photos into paintings or sketches. BeCasso is one option (and there are several others) that allows you to upload photos from your phone (like a favourite photo from your last trip or local scenery) and turn them into oil or water colour paintings, pencil drawings and more. This is a great way to get affordable art while also adding meaning to your space.

Frame an Item

If you want a large piece of art, framing an item like a map, silk scarf, vintage poster, etc. is a great way to achieve this on a budget. If you already own an item like this, it is a great way to showcase it and add memories to your space. It is also very affordable – all you need now is a frame! If you don’t already have an item to frame, you can look for something that reflects your interests at a thrift shop, Etsy, while travelling, etc.
